Strung Like Beads ...



















One of the pleasures of walking in the city is passing a familiar block and observing even a small change that suddenly shifts the streetscape.  This morning, at Fifth & 17th, I saw that the Bagel Factory vertical sign was gone, revealing its much older predecessor.






















Seventy-five years ago, the corner of the avenue looked like this,

and you can see the drugstore neon in its full glory.

Update, 6/12: A week later, the sign was gone again, hidden under Bagels.
