In Plain Sight

Some of the area's older houses are easier to spot than others.  A free-standing house set all the way back on its lot, with a porch for good measure, is a pretty sure bet.  481 27th St. appears on the 1880 Hopkins Atlas of Brooklyn, so we know it's 1870's at the latest.  With Green-Wood Cemetery nearby, it could be a good bit older.  In 1880 the block was empty except for a cluster of wooden houses at the top of the block.  Only two others, right above 481, are still standing.
